Hi!
We dropped the lower unit out to replace the impeller, and now, we can't get the lower unit back attached. Where the lower part of the split shaft goes into the collar, we can't get that little "***" through, so it just falls out again when we try to tighten it. We've looked and looked, and it sure looks like it's in the right place, but no matter what we do, it won't go all the way in.
Can anyone PLEASE tell me what the heck we're doing wrong?

Thanks soooo much for any help!

ps: I should add. We took the bolt completely out, and where the lower shaft goes in, where you would think that the nipple would go all the way through, it doesn't. It disappears into the collar from the bottom, but you can visibly tell it needs to go in farther, and even with the bolt out and it pushed into it as far as we can, it doesn't show up in the hole!

I think you are talking about aligning the indent in the shift rod with the coupler?

If so, shift into reverse so it extends down further.

Thanks for the reply, but, unfortunately that doesn't work. We can lower the upper shaft down quite a ways and we can raise the lower shaft up a ways, both the upper and lower travelling more than enough to connect the 2, we just can't get the lower shaft through the collar that holds it to the upper:-( I'll try to take a pic and post it, so that maybe my lousy wording can be supplemented:)
I think, anyway, it's in reverse. We only can click the shifter 2 positions. We either have forward and neutral, or reverse and neutral. I'm 99% sure it's reverse/n tho. Worked fine before we pulled it apart to replace the impeller:-(

I apoligize if I offended you.
No problem with the wording, it actually does look like a ***, LOL! :D

By the way, did you remove the screw first before trying to insert the *** into the collar? It won't go to the correct position otherwise?

if you can remove the upper bolt, remove connector and clean it out, also may have to spread the jaws, and insert the lower rod.

As tashasdaddy said, spread the brass connector a bit. You don't even have to remove it, just loosen the upper bolt and rotate the connector so the slot faces out. Stick a screwdriver in the slot and give it a twist to spread the slot a bit. Rotate the connector back to the original position, tighten the screw, and proceed with the lower one.

I had the same problem the last time i put my '62 together. They are right, the brass coupler may need to be opened a bit. I farted around for about an hour before it occurred to me last time.
