Ok, thanks for all the help in the past and my final questions are concerning the Lower Unit. I really am unable to tell if the lower unit is bad, becuase when you shift it is by hand, it seems to work flawlessly. But I can't for the life for me, get the motor to shift once hooked back up to the motor. I get either forward or reverse, one or the other! I have to be missing something! And special trick to lining up the shift so you get both gears?
Also on the lower unit which I am concinved it is not the original one, there is a small part like tube or hole by the revers cam lock, this is broken and my manual does not show this anywhere, Is this a vent? if not what is it and it is broken so what can I do? Thanks in advance!

If you install the gearcase in Neutral, you will not have a problem with either of the gears.

TMD

I always place the trottle in forward and the LU in forward when I remove or install a LU. The tibe you are asking about is for speedo. this tube connects to a fitting in the LU and then to the pressure speedometer.
