I ordered a new impeller and went to install it. It seems the impeller doesn't sit in the housing perfectly, i have to bend the splines to make it fit in there. is this correct?

Thanks

Yes, you have it set up perfectly. If the impeller was a loose fit, it would not pump water at all.

Cool, Thanks. I have the evinrude repair manual for this motor, but it doesn't say much about how to replace the impeller, just to inspect and replace if necessary. I guess its pretty straight forward if you're familiar with these things.

Do you have to grease up anything in the impeller housing before reinstalling in on the drive shaft?

Thanks.

No, nothing needed in that area really BUT I usually run a little grease around the inside of the impeller housing with a finger when installing the impeller. Makes it a little easier to rotate the impeller and forgiving for those that forget to turn the water on if using a flushette.

Be sure to re-install the O Ring at the top of the driveshaft and grease the splines.

Re: 1964 9.5 Sportwin Impeller Question

The cavity between the vanes is what makes it pump water. As the off-center impeller rotates, the cavity enlarges, drawing in a gulp of water. As it continues to rotate, the cavity becomes smaller, and squeezes the water out and up the water tube to the powerhead.

Awesome, thanks for help. Makes me feel a little more confident in my decision to try to get this old thing working again. I guess thats why those impellers burn up if you try to start the motor without water, as there is no lubrication on the splines as they are rubbing up against the housing.
