Hey y'all,

I picked up this boat a while back. It's a 16-ish foot fiberglass rig. The Evinrude Speedifour that is mounted is pretty well seized. I think it's beyond repair and it's certainly beyond my capacity, both ability and patience.

Anyway, a 1989 Johnson VRO 110 has come up on my radar. Is that too much for the boat?

Thanks!

Doug

Perhaps, a 1965 is rated for a 100hp

Next question:

I am not much of a skier, so I have been exploring the idea of cutting out the section of the fiberglass in front of the windshield in order to make a casting deck for bass fishing. I know it's labor intensive and I will have to re-configure the windshield altogether, but is it possible?

Yup it's possible, IF you do a proper retro fit for the new casting deck.
Also, a 110 hp motor is WAY to much power for that boat!!! Most 16 foot SKI type boats max out from 70-90 hp. Before you hang any motor on the boat, I'd HIGHLY recommend you to a thorough inspection of the transom to ensure it's structural integrity.

Aside from drilling pilot holes in the transom, how can I check it out? I've pulled on it and tapped around with a hammer and it all feels solid, plus it has a 400-ish pound motor hanging on it already.

Drill, On the Inside, some core sample holes. Only go about 1" deep. Drill down low around the drain hole and then work out. If you get light dry shavings...Fill em with a sealant and consider yourself lucky. If Dark and Wet shavings. Transom needs to be replaced.
