I am new to this but, really want to learn. Is this the correct Carb kit for a 1964 3 HP Lightwin Evinrude? Sierra 18-7043. Thanks for any info. this motor almost started and then fuel was dripping from the high speed jet adjustment. I bought this motor from the original owner. He said it ran last year. I recently posted about low compression on a 1976 4 hp johnson. This motor seems to have a lot more compression when I pull the rope. Any help on where to start on the low compressuion would also be appreciated.

What is the compression readings?

New packing behind the packing nut may solve the leak, along with tightening the packing nut.

I don't know what that means. Packing nuts? i have never taken apart a carb. This is my first. Does the packing come with a carb kit? I just looked at the pictures in the manual. i now see what you mean by Packing Nuts. Should I rebuild the carburator? Or just replace packing?

Hi Mike in Cairo (pronounced "Kay-row") for the outsiders reading ;) Packing nuts are little fiber washers that the idle adjustment needles on your carb pass through. They help to from an air tight seal while still allowing you to adjust the needles to dial in the idle and/or hi speed performance. Here's a great link that can walk you through a basic carb rebuild, which really just involves disassembling and cleaning the carb body and prelacing the various o-rings and gaskets within the carb itself. Not to worry, it's a simple DIY job that is meant to be done every few seasons. Good luck. Holler i you get stuck.

Thank you for the reponse. I don't know how else you would pronounce K-RO. LOL I have been here 7 years. Moved here from Orlando. I had already found trhe link you sent on the tune-up procedure. I have a carb kit on order. I am a pretty good mechanic, just never worked on small engines. I have decided it is time to learn. I have the original book from the man I bought the motor from. It says the model #'s are 3026 and 3027. Is he correct on the year? With any luck I will have it running this weekend. After I get this one running I need to see if I should tackle the low compression on my 1976 4hp Johnson. All thoughts are appreciated. Thanks.

Model numbers 3026 and 3027 are for 1958 Lightwins, 3027 being the long shaft.

For what it's worth you can get sierra parts at your local NAPA auto parts store. Mine got me that carb kit the next morning with an afternoon call in for it, no postage.

+1. I've had good luck at NAPA too. Apparently, O'Reilly auto parts can get them as well. Once you've got the 3 hp up and running the 4 hp should be a piece of cake. However, because it's a bit newer it probably has an electronic ignition system rather than the old "universal magneto" like your '64. Otherwise, it should be very similar. That's what's so great about these old OMC motors, once you can work one, you can work on 'em all. I'm between K-Ro and O-town in Tallahassee. Holler if you ever need a beach fix, or want to come hang out in the big city. LOL.

Thanks for the info. I may take you up on the visit. It turns out my 1964 is really a 1958. I am determined to figure oput these outboard motors. I have always had a saying, " If I can't fix it, it ain't broke " LOL.

Oooooooh a '58 is sweet. I love the reverse two tone paint job that year. Not to worry, these motors are very figure-out-able. You really only need compression, spark and fuel, and assuming the compression is ok (over 80 psi) all the rest is pretty east to fix. Just focus on one issue at a time. Confirm compression, then spark, then fuel, then try to start in a test tank (no muffs). If your motor really is a '58 model, I believe you'll need the 2-line pressure fuel tank. While they are period correct and can work just fine when functioning properly, they can also cause some pesky problems. If should become and issue, you can always convert your motor to a modern single line system that uses a fuel pump. NAPA autoparts, iboats.com, marineengine.com, ebay.com, amazon.com, aomci.org are all great places to look for parts. These may help.

Re: 1964 carb kit

This one has the tank on top. So no fuel pump to worry about. I have the original papers. Everything except the sales receipt. I bought it from the original owner. Like I said it tried to run, then started leaking fuel out of the high speed jet adjustment. Just got the carb today. I will attempt this, this weekend. I will post pics later. I also have a 1960 Orlando Clipper Runabout With a 40 hop Johnson Sea horse that is running. i just need to take it out and see what happens. I kinda wanted to go with someone who new more then me. Also if I needed a tow. LOL I got the Clipper from the origanal owner as well. I bought it in Orlando.
