Hi all! I just got a great running speeditwin 28 hp. Right now i am using the pull rope to start it because it has not ignition switch or keys, but the wires are all there. I want to hook up the wiring for electric start, but cannot figure out what wires are what. Also, if don't use the wiring and use the pull rope to start it, how do i kill the engine? Can i hook up a kill switch some how and where do that? its a model 28303.

Re: 1964 evinrude 28hp wiring help!

There are two black wires coming from the magneto. Connecting those two together (with a push button or ignition switch) kills the motor. Do Not disconnect or defeat the vacuum cut-out switch when you do. OR simply turn the throttle toward "slow" till it is too slow to run, and stalls. May have to back off on the idle speed screw to do that.

The starter, starter solenoid, and choke are pretty basic. Anybody with a knowledge of basic automotive electricity could do that.

would any ignition switch that i can buy at an auto store work or does it have to be specific to that harness or motor?

I can hook up a kill switch from the magneto as you say for now.

An automobile switch will not work. In fact, it will destroy the magneto coils. You need a switch designed for magneto ignition. There are plenty of them here at iboats. Hint: Most motors with modern CDI igniton use such switches.

You have a PM
