I have seen similar items on the board and have tried the fixes but has not worked yet. The engine starts and runs great however I have no neutral or reverse. There is power going through the leads to the lower unit correctly when in neutral and reverse and the wires are showing about 6 ohms through the casing. I have put mineral spirits into the lower unit and spun it and let it set and spun it again and then flushed it again with the mineral spirits then refilled with Mercury Premium Gear Lube. I was told this is what to use at a local dealer. I was not able to find OMC Premium in the local area. Is the Mercury Premium the problem? If not, any suggestions? Also, shifting the throttle to reverse works like a kill switch.

Could be. Only "OMC type C" lube works in electric L/Us, nothing else. I wouldn't go further until I switched to the right stuff.

I'll see if I can track some down but what I understand is that OMC type C is no longer made and OMC Premium Blend is what replaced it. Am I wrong? Thanks for the input.

No, your right. OMC Premium blend replaces it... sorry.

Have you checked the connectors where top and lower wiring connect? They are behind a small inspection plate. I had the same problem and the wires were frayed where they joined the connectors. First it was intermittent problem and then only reverse. The rubber on the wires was cracked and bare wire was showing too. I repaired the fray and coated the wires with hi temp silicone. The problem went away and never came back.

I used regular automotive hypoid oil once in that gearcase and never had a shifting problem...I know it was the wrong oil but I was in a jamb and used it.

Are you talking about the knife disconnects prior to the wires going down to the lower unit or are there other connects that I am not aware of.
