This engine was completely gone through 2 years ago. Tried to use it this year it fires right up with choke pulled out. As soon as choke is pushed in it dies. I took top half of carb off and cleaned. put it back on and it does the same thing. so far I have replaced fuel lines, cleaned fuel filter, applied new plugs, cleaned carb. Also I need to know the bench setting for the lean/rich adjustment on the carb as it was disconnected when i popped the hood. any help would be greatly appreciated.

You didn't go deep enough. The high speed orfice jet is in the very bottom of the carburetor, deep behind the hex head plug. That is also where the last few dregs of fuel lie and turn to gum. It has to be absolutley shiny clean, with no trace of any coating at all. If it is not, the motor will run lean and require choking to keep it going.

Slow speed initial opening is 1 1/2 turns, but forget that till you get that orfice clean.

Hm-m-m-m. Seems like it can be. Been a long time since I did one. Just checked the book and it doesn't say anything about having to remove the flywheel.

Yes, you can remove it w/o removing the flywheel.

Well I have been all through the carb...everything seems fine will run great with the choke in the out position both in neutral and in gear but as soon as you push the choke back in it starts running rough and eventually dies!!!
Am at my wits end.

You're still describing a fouled carburetor. Did you actually remove and manually cllean that high speed jet? If not, do so.

If pumping the fuel primer bulb, acting as a manual fuel pump, makes an improvement, suspect a fuel leak (which should be obvious) or a failing fuel. If no improvement, suspect the carburetor.

I'm telling you, the orfice is partially clogged. Take it out and look. Or could be did you replace the gaskets in the carb?

There are 5 screws holding the float bowl down. The one on the inside forward corner is reached by moving the throttle so that the cam is out of the way. Closing the choke makes it easier to reach the one on the rear.

Go to the BRP parts catalog for the 1968 9.5 model. The carburetor is basically the same as yours.
