I have a few questions about a new motor i picked up for my tri-hull. It's a 1964 Evinrude 90hp starflite 90-s. Model#904935; serial#E03005
#1; what type of shifting does this motor have? i dont see a cable hook up for shift lever so is it electric? If so what type? Will i need a special control box for it?
#2; While pulling the old spark plugs i found the number 3 plug has what looks to be a bigger set of threads than the rest, it's the same type of plug (Champion J4J) but where the threads are its a bigger diameter and the thead size is also bigger. Was this a fix from someone stripping the threads and if so what do i do to put in the new plugs?

#2 Sounds like it was a heli-coil fix and the heli-coil unscrewed with the plug. Before trying to put the heli-coil back in, clean the area very well to remove oil. If the heli-coil unscrews from the plug and can screw back into the head, use some loctite on the heli-coil to put it back in. Let it dry before screwing the plug back in, otherwise you have loctite holding all three parts together. This would be cheapest fix, probably not the best.

On that age engine, and having the electro-matic gear case, along with a carb that is unigue to that series of engines, be sure that engine is sound, before investing any money. Not to throw a wet blanket on your project, and we will help all we can! That engine could be a real money pit, with no return. That engine, and everything about it, is far outdated, and exspensive.

Take the plug with the larger threads, that larger courser thread will screw off the smaller finer threads of that old plug if that is what it is. You will have a piece with threads on the inside and outside.

R.Johnson thanks for your thoughts but i am confident that this beauty will roar again, the guy i got it from said it was his father that purchesed it new and the son replacedit with a newer engine for his boat and put this one in storage. Thankfully for me it was not in the weather and is in good shape. But i still dont know a whole lot about it, i so have a manual but it describes several different types of shifting. Which type is this one and what kind of controler do i need for it?
Gradndview, you were right, it took just a small amount of force to remove the Heli-coil. What can i use to creat a seal between it and the engine itself? so Next time it's time to replace plugs i wont un-screw it.

if the treded insert looks like a big spring, don put it back in. any good VW repair shop will have a sweet machined steel insert that will not pull out everytime you take the plug out like the heli-coil brand spring type will, we used to peen them into the aluminum VW heads on our little 1/8 mile cars with great success

The insert Schmbler is talking about is called a (keen-Sert), it locks the insert inplace with pins 120 degree's apart. That will cure your stripped spark plug hole. I still stand by my above post. That engine has a remote junction box with all the inerds for the charging system, do you have that? It has a remote control box with a shift switch, does that work? I realize you want to get this engine running, but that thing could bleed you to death. You can buy better for less, and be much more reliable. I can't think of a worse engine to restore for general use, unless you are very mechanically inclined, and bent on using it.

Will i need a special control box for it?
Yes you will need a special control for your engine ,you can use the Evinrude control with buttons or the Johnson model (see picture ) .
You can find them of EBay all the time , just make sure it's for a electric gear, NOT any el-hydraulic gears
( they can be rebuild ,but.... ) .
If you don't have this box , don't worry, you might be better of whitout it , I moved the solenoid up to the engine , replaced those old rectifiers whit a new solid state rectifier + replaced the charging regulator with an new Bosch unit (1040-0190215028 ) .

But before you staring to spend some big money ... check compression and function of the gear .

Pistons , rings , most gaskets , impeller , propeller , most bearings, are still available ( but not always as OEM parts )

Pats for your electric gear might be available if you know who/where to ask , last known price :
Clutch hub rear ( forward ) # 378519 - List price = $378.40
Clutch spring # 311030 - List price = $336.70
Bushing forward gear # 308276 - List price = $96.45

Just so everyone is clear and we can drop the subject, Yeah it's an old engine and yeah probably not worth a repair shops time, but i dont fix it because i depend on this engine for my boat i fix it because i enjoy doing so and i i have the time and money to do it. If i wanted a newer engine then i would buy one, but i prefure this one. With that said, R.johnson thanks for giving me the name of the striped plug fix, and Droll thanks for your great advice! I also checked out the pics of your engine and it's like your working on mine. I hope you dont mind if i ask you questions in the future, especially about the control box mod that you did to yours.

Don't take me wrong here! My points were to help you save some money. I'm not running down your engine, and it would make a good winter project. If you have any quesstions as you go along, I would certainly be glad to help.

Sounds like you know quite a bit about where to locate parts.
I have the same engine, gear, boat etc. but I need another Rectifier.
Can you help out, maybe a new part number or at least the specs I am looking for.

Much appreciated.
