Hello, I'm new to this forum, and looking forward to checking in on it from now on. The question I have is that I just bought a old fiberglass boat, it's a Devil Ray by Custom Craft. The motor that came on the boat is the Starflite 90-S. My question is, what can any of you out there tell me about it ? I've got some experience with outboards, buy almost everything I have dealt with had been older than this, and Mercury. I had a friend tell me it looked like it had a special lower unit on it, and the motor might be something special. I didn't know if Evinrude made a factory racing motor that they sold to the public, or if what I've got is a standard Evinrude. Also, is this an electric shift motor ? It looks to be from the controls with the single lever and three buttons on top of the control box. I'm really just interested in knowing more about it. Thanks for any help you can give me. David

Give us the model number off the plate attached to the transom clamp, woody. Then we may be able to help.

the Starflite was not a special motor it was electric shift. The electric shift is the down fall. Nothing wrong with the electric shift just difficult to work on and hard to get parts for and when you do find them they are expensive. Don't know if your's is a 1965 , but here is the 65

That is a 1964. Not much different than the '65. It still is a standard Selectric Shift. The 75 horsepower motors had the same lower unit. It is not a "racing" lower unit. Well, I suppose you can race your boat if you want to. But you can't jack this one way up half way out of the water like a true "quicky".

I have the 75 hp of that year for two years now and think it is a great old motor just a little fuel hunger. I can maybe help with your wiring if you still need it just email me josh-scouts@live.com . and just in case no one told you there is a special lower unit oil for that there are magnets in the lower that shift it and regular 80/90 is to thick and will not allow it to shift. I also have a couple extra props that are two much pitch for mine. Just drop me a line if you need help.
