1964 5.5hp johnson seahorse Sorry for posting alot, but now I'm very confused about the fuel/oil mix for this motor.. On the Motor itself it says fuel mix 50:1, but now I'm reading from several post that 1964 and before should be 24:1, because of the brass barrings. I'm going to decarb and run it on Monday so I want to make sure I have the right mix. Man I should have stuck to golfing....

You can follow the manufacturer's recommendations. This engine was probably run for all those years at 50:1. However, I'd start out with a little richer mixture, say 32:1, since it hasn't been running for a while.<br /><br />In fact, if you want, you can use a 32:1 mixture forever in that motor...split the difference, mor or less.

Thank You.. Me and my coworker discussed that last night, and he said just split it up and we came up with 32:1. Another question though,, should i expect alot of smoke, or will it go away after awhile..

Very good idea. Even if it would do fine on 50:1, it's old, and a little extra oil won't hurt anything. It will cause slightly more smoke than 50:1, but a motor that old wouldn't run clean if you were using 100:1...

Re: 1964 fuel/oil Mix

Ok used I used 32:1.. Went and rented a boat, loaded it up with fishing gear and crab pots. Started it up and off I went.. Now the problem, Motor would not go at all. I could row the boat faster then that motor. When I got home, neighbor came over to see how i did, and said wow you ran it really rich, because of the black below the exhaust. Well to make the story short, Looks like the problem was the High/Low speed adjustments. Got home put it in a bucket and started to adjust them. Looks like i have them now, because when i put it in gear, the barrel almost falls over.. Thanks Guys for all info,,, Great site..

Actually, Mike, that's a year off.<br /><br />'64 and later engines use 50:1.<br /><br />'63 and earlier engines use 24:1<br /><br />Good luck. :)
