Hello-
I am in the process of rebuilding the lower unit on my 1964 Johnson 18HP seahorse. With regards to the water pump, I bought a new impeller, impeller plate, and grommet for the tube. My question is there supposed to be any gaskets for the pump housing itself where the driveshaft goes through the housing, and also where the housing bolts to the loer unit? Seems like a pump would not work well if it isn't completely sealed? Is this just the design of them? I am confused, just want to do the job right the first time. There is a gap around the driveshaft where it goes through the impeller housing, shouldn't this have a seal or o-ring? Does the whole upper part of the lower unit fill with water when the engine is running and then come out through the exhaust port? Any help would be great. Thanks for your time and thanks to all who answered my previous posts! This is a very helpful site.
