Hi

I have just aquired a 1965 14 ft.Glastron Skiflite with a 1964 Johnson 40 electric start. Boat and motor have all original parts except it appears the lower unit has been replaced. The boat and motor have also been stored in a garage (in Massachusetts) since 1980. The owner said he parked it and left it. No winterizing or treatment for over 20 years. The engine is not seized, appears to be in good condition and was used in fresh water only.

My questions:

What is the best way to approach this? I am moderately capable around car engines but no boat engine experience. Can I try to start it or should I have it inspected by a mechanic before that? I know I will have to rebuild/replace the water pump, carb, hoses etc. I don't want to make thing worse by doing something stupid.

What are the chances this motor can be used without a total rebuild?

Thanks for any help or advice

Dave H.

Hello David
Most of the time, if a motor will roll she'll go. The first thing I would do is obtain a service and repair manual. This will make things go a lot easier. Most of the work you will need to do is standard service stuff that should be done annualy. I would start with a compression test, then check for spark. You might want to squirt some pre-mix through the carb throat and roll it over some first, with the plug wires off. (just to oil it up a little). Clean fuel system. clean ignit. system, cooling system, starting system and check lower unit. You may be able to find an after market manual that the library for free.

after twenty years of storage you can best bet that the impeller has dried up and as soon as you start it the impeller will probally start to crumble, then it will over heat :)

Alcan, Humblechoice:
Thanks for the reply. I plan to get a service manual and fix the stuff I feel comfortable with. From what I'm hearing, maybe it isn't a lost cause. Who knows, maybe I can dip it in this year.

Any tips on the water pump/impeller replacement? Do they come in kits, and do I need to replace other connected parts?

Again, thanks in advance,

Dave H.
