Well, I'll start off by saying im (no mechanic) of any sort,I have a (1964 Johnson 60hp) that was giving to me by my father before he passed away and would like to know if anyone could give me any knowledge on it? Is there someone that has one or had one that can share any info on it?

It does kick over but never had it in the water to see if it even stays running,I was also wondering if this motor even have a pre-warning buzzer on it to let me know theres a problem.I hear some of you guys have that on yours. All this boat has on it is a speedometer and I dont even know if that even works lol,Its a 1964 Lone Star. And one last thing, what is a VRO I hear alot of that in here and if mine has that too lol? Im sorry for all the dumb questions and DO APPRECIATE any help that is giving to me,Thankyou in advance and Godbless.

Your motor is a very basic model with none of the bells and whistles that you mention. Electric start, magneto ignition, manual shift, no generator unless the kit has been installed. Simple and uncomplicated. Fuel mix is 50:1 using unleaded regular and TC-W3 Certified outboard oil. That's a pint of oil to 6 gallons of gas. Lower unit takes plain ol' 80-90 outboard gear oil from Wal-Mart.

i have a 1956 30 hp johnson that runs like a champ.dont let the age get you down.lots of other guys have 1950,s motors that they use reguarlly.they are tough ,simple and reliable.most likely you will want to look at getting new coils as these have a tendency to crack and fail when their that old.sierra coils are superior to the omc coils also and usually cheaper.now you may have to look around for parts a little as it is 43 years old.a manual is a must.a parts manual would be a great bonus as then you would have the part numbers to cross reference with.maybe somebody on here has one on pdf that they could send you?

You might want to read the post "Awakening an Outboard Motor" in this forum. It covers all the steps you should do on an engine that has sat for a long long time.
