1964 Johnson 90HP V4 - Going into Service this Summer 2012

Just purchased a 1963 16' Starcraft Starmist with a 1964 Johnson 90HP V4 - Going into Service this Summer 2012.

The motor has not been used much in the last 15 Years. The previous owner has gone through the motor and all should be well but - I do want to take every precaution before it takes it's first drink.

I plan to do the following:

- Check Compression and Spark.
- Check the Impeller.
- Clean Carb.

Any more Idea's before I launch?

New plugs, clean fuel/oil mix, and check the lower unit oil. Run it slow for the first few minutes anyway.

well if you havnt gotten the boat on the water yet. you probly have. but anyways. id check over all lube points and fluids. i bought a merc and lower unit wont shift. called the guy i bought it from, and he told me he drains fluids and lubes from cases to winterize. thats all good, but the guy never put any lube back in lower unit?.?.?. ummmm why he wouldnt is beyond me... it sat for 2 yrs and now im looking at dropping lower unit just to see whats rusted together so it wont shift... just another thing to remember when buying used stuff... you never know what the other guy is thinking.......

That lower unit require Type C gear old. I think Bomb sells it as Premium but check with a dealer. Points and condenser should be checked too. that engine has a 4 barrel carb, 1 body 4 venturis, with 4 idle mixture needles just waiting to be misadjusted. My Dad, my uncle, and myself have all owned the 1965 model of that engine.

If you check the impeller you might as well replace it. No sense pulling it all apart and not replacing it..
