Hello. I have a merc 500 which is leaking gas from the lower of the two carbs. I noticed that the motor was not running as well as it had earlier that day, and opened the engine to see gas leaking from the lower carb while idling. I shut it down and pulled the front face plate. All the seals look great (this motor was apparently rebuilt recently), but when i squeeze the prime bulb, fuel squirts out of the jet (i think thats what its called, haha), as well as from the bottom of the vertical pole in the carb, and from a small hole towards the rear of the carb. Im just trying to figure out how to proceed. I guess with my lack of knowledge, i should probably bring it to a dealer. THis is only happening from the lower of the two carbs by the way. Any advice or info would be very much apreciated.

Hi, Craig.

You will save yourself time and money if you buy a factory Service Manual and repair the carb yourself.

Either the float is stuck or the float needle is blocked from sealing. A simple fix.

The excess gas is causing the bottom cylinder to run far too rich, and that is why you noticed poor performance.

Good luck, and tell us how it comes out. :)

The inlet needle is leaking, you should really remove the carb and rebuild but the lower carb it's possiable to remove the starter, then the filter covers, than the 2 screws that retain the carb top, lift off the top replace the inlet and set the float level and your good togo.
