hi all
i have a 1964 evinrude 5.5hp that i am trying to fix for a friend. we got it started the other night, but it would only go for about 3 seconds and then quit totally. the next pull was the same thing, etc etc. started every pull, but only for 3 seconds. i took it to the river tonight andtried a bunch of things. it had J4J plugs in it. i put in J6C and it ran awesome for about 5 minutes, and then started running on only the bottom cylinder. i removed the top plug, it was wet, cleaned it up, and it ran for about 10 seconds on both, then one again. i tried J4C in both, and it did the whole only run for 3 seconds then quit thing. i dont know much about heat range of plugs but could this be it? any advice would be great.
thanks
tim

Logan,

I don't know what all you have done to this engine but, I do not think that plugs are your problem.

First, you need to make sure both plugs are firing when you "lose" a cylinder. If they are, you have a flooding problem. In that engine, it is probably tye needle and seat and/or the float in the carb. Both are very easy to replace.

thanks djohns. i checked and both have a big fat spark. i also just noticed that the fuel pump (i think its the fuel pump) gasket is leaking a tiny bit when you squeeze the bulb hard (opposite side from where gasline connects to engine)
