I'm new to boating and starting to rebuild my 14' starcraft fiberglass runabout. I wish I could figure out what I have, my id plate is worn away. Anyway I was given a 50 hp mercury to replace the 1970 johnson electronic controlled outboard. After lifting the engine I'm now a little concerned about the Merc. Is 50 hp too much or does it weight to much for this boat?

Welcome to the Starmada! At the top of the Starcraft forum there is a thread with just about ever year's brochure... did you see if yours was in there? Most have the HP data

50 Hp should be just fine for the boat if memory serves me correctly I don't think Johnson/Evinrude made an electric shift smaller than 40 hp.

I can't expand the picture of the model listings very much without it distorting but I think it's a Marlin. I'm not 100% though. Anyway if that's correct, it says 40HP. Should I be concerned about the +10 difference?

Mike--welcome. if transom and floors are sound, i wouldn't worry about the 10hp difference
