I have been in the process of getting my motor all straightened out with working the bugs out. this past sunday was out on the water testing and tuning the motor. and when i would put a heavy load buy puching the throttle the lower unit would slam pop out of gear. then i would lower the speed and would pop back in. ive been reading past threads before i registered and im guessin it could be many options. but dont have a clue. im mechanically inclined and am willing to do the work. let me know your thoughts and questions

Any metal particles in the lower unit oil? Drive pin in good shape, is the prop hub spun?

i know im getting a little water in the gear case case i believe there is suppose to a gasket seal between the upper gear case and where the lower gear case come together there was a whole the size of an 1/8 in drill bit on the edge of the upper gear case. could water getting into there cause that?

Take the prop off and scribe a line across the inner bass hub and the prop housing. Install the prop and run the engine untill it acts up, remove the prop and see if the line has moved out of alignment, if the alignment is off you have a spun prop hub. If all is ok with the prop I would think you have a clutch dog and gear problem in the lower unit.

i know its a dumb ?, but what does the clutch dog technically do. i have a whole service manual for the engine(by outboard marine corp. 1964) but dont mention anything about a clutch dog. just curious is all

We are talking about a manual shift lower unit arn't we, you didn't post a model number. The cluth dog is what connects the the gears (forward and reverse) to the prop shaft. The cluth dog has ears or fingers that mate up to the gear. If the ears get rounded off a little they will slip out of of the gear under torque, as the torque eases off the cluth dog will go back into the gear. Sometimes it will jump in and out of gear.

Its an electric shift. so the clutch dog is like a pinion gear?

Sorry, I assumed it was a manual shift, my mistake. That's what I get for not asking for a model number. There is no cluth dog in an electric shift lower unit. The shift is controlled by electric coils and cluth springs.
At this point I would check for a spun prop hub.

What kind of oil do you have in the g/c ? They require Premium Blend or " C " lube or otherwise they can slip.

A mechanic told me 85w90 would be fine. but ive read type c would be the best.

Re: 1964 STARFLITE 90S lower unit

just this past saturday i purchased a 1968 starflite 100s. all complete the one concern is that, will the lower unit on that fit my 64. the only thing about that is that the gear case is bigger but the upper gear case bolt holes look the same. that is also an electric shift. the only differance i can see with the whole motor is that it has a electronic ignition instead of points and distributor. and the only thing wrong with it is the stator under the flywheel is shot.
