Ive been having problems with my motor shifting. I came across a lower gearcase that i was goin to use for the coild and gears. My problem before was that it wouldnt shift into both fwd or rev. I got it to shift into forward then it stil wouldnt shift into rev. I changed out the rev coil and of course the wire was busted to the rev coil. I swapped it with my parts coil. And took it out and still no rev. Now when i was on the water the motor was making funny noises like a bad skip but when i tryed to turn the ignition off, the motor would not turn off i had to pull coil wire on the motor off to shut it off. When i turned the key switch off the engine smoothed its self back out. This never happened before. I started it again and at the time it wouldnt shift into forward either. Now when i was at the dock getting ready to pull it out i started it again and for the heck of it i shifted it into rev(nothing) and then fwd(moved in forward). To me its starting to sound something electrical from the key switch to the jucntion box but not definate. Let me know what you guys think.

Sounds to me like you have a lot of electrical probs. Get an OMC factory service manual with wiring diagrams in it and go from there.

My guess is the key switch is shot. That would affect both running and stopping and shifting. The switch carries a lot of amps on that model. But don't ignore the rest of the wiring either.

Boobie i do have an omc manual for it. And the switch was brand new when i had a marina put it together for me. The thing is to he did not have a manual when he was wiring all the wires to the switch. Could there be a way to bypass the actual shift switch to use toggle switchs? And this weekend ill be taking a look at the switch to see how the wires are wired up

well to give a quick update. i talked to an old timer that i have been talking to about my motor and he says that my motor is suppose to have a battery ignition switch which has three prongs and the one i have now on my boat has like six prongs which i guess is for magneto. thats where i am goin to start this weekend. im pretty sure that 3 prong switch is just a standard key switch that i can get at the parts store. let me know what you guys think
