I posted this on the 14th and only got one reply. But this is the situation I can get the motor started but as soon as I put it in gear it dies. The only way I found for it to go is to pull the choke all the all out and hold it there while moving. But even then it will go fast for a few seconds then for slow and then fast again. And this is the only way it will go in gear. Member 4724 told me it might be the mixture knob or the carb needs to be completely cleaned up. I need some more thoughts on it so I can FISH!! Also the model is fd-19d which the other member told me that it was 65' 18hp motor which when bought was told 20 is this correct? Please help.

As far as identifying your motor, here is a link to information. It is a 1965 18HP. http://www.evinrude.com/docktalk/modref/jomodyr/JHP18.html
It sounds like you have a fuel problem and if it were mine I would start with a carb cleaning and carb rebuild kit.
Good luck.

Likewise I had a motor'65 johnson, that I had to run more and more on choke,we got stuck on the bay. The carb had to be rebuilt then the fuel pump. Safe than sorry.

Absolutely,a fuel starvation problem. If the motor
has sat around a lot go through the fuel system from tank to carb with attention to cleaning and
replacement as required.Dont forget the tank vent
and pickup tube.
