1965 johnson seahorse 33. ......I hadn't checked the lower unit oil in a couple of seasons, and it all locked up on me this morning....I know better now. Anyway, I've managed to take off the lower unit and found the bearings bad. I saw a couple of gaskets that need to be replaced. One on the top of the shaft where it links to the motor, and prop shaft seal the one inside the washer like thing with the tiny spring around it. I had to grind the bearing to get it off the shaft (tried every other way to pull it off) made a couple of dents in the end of the drive shaft. My buddy thinks it should still be ok, though. I was just hoping for some guidance as to what these gaskets might be called to order them, and if there is anything else I need to do. The water pump impeller looks fine. The gears looked fine too, but the shaft was slightly boogered up where that bearing was. I can't believe it hadn't done more damgage having zero oil in there for no telling how long. I know better now, and learned my lesson about maintenance. I grew up fishing from the boat with this motor and wouldn't want to lose it. Thanks for your help!

Also, will a normal parts house have the two bearings that go on the shaft?

If you clean the bearings you should be able to find some numbers engraved in them.Armed with the bearings and the numbers, you can go to any store that specializes in bearings and they will have them. These bearings are quite generic.

I'd be looking for a replacement lower unit at this point.

Yes, I cleaned them up and one of them has numbers, the other's numbers must have been cleaned off when it messed up. I bet they can find them, though. Glad to know they are not unable to get, though. Didn't find them listed here for that year motor. And I made the plug mistake a long time ago.

I thought that too, but this friend of mine is a pretty good thinker on this kind of thing, and he thinks it can work. Are you concerned about the shaft damage?

Again, please give any advice you have here. I really appreciate the experience of the folks on here. Would you believe the cost of the bearings are about 30 bucks each?

Must be some kind of special summer price deal. I show the OEM driveshaft bearing as part #378578 available from authorized BRP dealers at a list price of $16.86 US.

Yes, and individual parts are more expensive than just replacing the whole lower unit. You can probably pick up a good L/U for $100 or so.

I hadn't found any searching on here, but maybe looking in the wrong place. Where should I look? I'm gonna try and fix this one, It looks like the bearings are the only real problem. I got some parts in today for it, and I think I still need the small rubber seal that goes at the top of the shaft.

What is that called exactly, and where would I find a lower unit? Thanks!

I'm picking up a 1965 JH20B tomorrow from a guy in tahoe where they can't run 2 strokes anymore. He says it's seized, but has been sitting for 20 years nad ran when he put it up. If I can't free it up, I'll check the lower unit, and if it's good I'll make you a deal ($35) and you pay the shipping from 95713.

Thanks for the very reasonable offer, there. I think mine is a short shaft. I'm gonna see how this works out seeing as I've already spent more than that on the parts. It looks like there are still a few of those out there. I found a fairly local guy that has one today, and he said the 33 and 40 hp lower units are the same. Is that right?

Okay, we got it all put back together today, and it seemed fine up until we bolted on, but it would only go in one direction, no matter where the shifter was placed. Took it back apart and we realized we'd left the screw out of the side of the lower unit that attaches through the thing that works the clutch dog. But we got that taken care of and we're ready to put it back on there in the morning. I'm still keeping my fingers crossed here, but I think it's going to work!

It depends on which 40hp he is talking about. If he is referring to any of the "Superquiet" 40hp models with the "fat" midsections, no they are not the same at all. They also will not fit your motor. These would be the 40hp models built in the 60s.

There is a 40hp model that was made in the 70s, which is a derivative of the 33hp, 28hp and some of the 50s 35hp motors. That gearbox probably will fit your motor.

The key item to tip you off to which is which, is that your motor has a single water tube for the waterpump, while the "Superquiet" 40hp motors have two water tubes.
