Finally got my 1965 33HP Evinrude Ski-Twin on the water yesterday, and much to my dissapointment it did not perform well at all. To begin with, it wouldn't go past maybe 8 mph max, and that was full throttle. (It is on a 15 ft. tri-hull fishing boat.) Then, I went to turn around and head back to the dock so I knocked it out of gear to give it a break before I headed back to the dock I went to put it in forward and it went about 10 ft. and forward went out. The strange thing is, I had reverse....so I got to idle part of the way back to the ramp in reverse, until the motor just completely choked out. So, I was just wondering if anybody has any ideas on what needs to be done. I rebuilt the carb a couple months ago, and the lower unit has been completely gone-through. Any ideas??:(

Do you have the factory manual ?

Start by listing everything you have done and why you did it.

The history background of the engine,
is it new to you,
has it ever run good for you.

Compression numbers etc.

Did you set the shift rod height per the manual spec.?

No I unfortunately do not have the factory manual.

I bought this engine this spring, knowing the lower unit was bad. The previous owner got into some rocks pretty bad and tore the prop up and the gears were seized up. I took it too a marine mechanic and he put new gears and seals in the lower unit. It has always sounded good, but I have never run it on the water untill saturday.

I do not know the compression, I was going to have that checked out asap.

Becasue I dont have the manual, I didn't/can't set the shift rod height per the manual.
