1st off , it sounds like that mEcH. isnt all that good . i'm a carpenter and got a '66 running just fine . the best thing you did was post here , i'm sure the 'johnnyheads' will be chiming in soon and you'll be twisting wrenches w/ confidence . but one thing doesnt make sense. your prop spins , but the boat doesnt move ? are you still tied off ? lol ,.......on second thought , your motor is revving up but, youre seeing lots of bubbles from the exhaust and the prop isnt spinning .

Im surprised a mechanic didnt mention to check the drive pin at the prop? Likely broken/missing, and hardly worth throwing it away!

Could be other things, but is the first thing to check.

Second check would be to see if the prop is severely spun.

You can try it in tub or barrel or lake as long as water intake screens are under water, or use your flushing ears if you want. You don't need it running fast. Just idle in gears forward and reverse for testing. The prop may turn from some shaft friction even if pins are broken or gear is stripped. Before you trash the motor, think about changing out the lower end for a manual shift setup. That will include the lower end gearbox, shifter rods and shift handle assembly, and upper housing and shifter cables etc. I did it with mine and it has worked fine for years. You need to shop around for the old parts but they are plentiful and not too costly. I think it all only cost about $300.00 and I did the swap myself, it is not hard to do. Basically you can put the power head on to another manual setup. Don't just trash it if it runs well someone will buy it.
best to you. We'll help where we can.

If you have a spun hub on the prop, the prop may appear to turn ok in a test tank, but put it in the lake under load, and it will slip and the boat will go nowhere. The motor will just rev up.

Re: 1965 40 HP Johnson Seahorse won't go......

So, I got it started back up today in a tub of water first, to see if I could tell if the prop was spinning at all, before taking it to the lake tomorrow. Once started though, with all the bubbles from the exhaust, I couldn't tell if the prop was spinning cause I couldn't see it thru the bubbles. So, I left it running and put a 2x4 down in the bucket to see if it was moving. Still couldn't tell, but it didn't seem to be. Took it out of the tub and found the cone on the end of the prop had a chip out of it and the drive pin had fallen out. Found and put the pin back in, put the water ears on it this time so I could see for sure if the prop was spinning or not, but now it won't start. Had the same sound as it did on the lake that first day. Took the fly wheel off and found it had broke the flywheel key again. What could be causing that to keep breaking? Just went out and got another key, getting ready to put it in before it gets dark hopefully, but wondering why it broke again?

2 reasons.

First is that you are trying to use a hardware store key, which wont work

Second is improper torque. What are you torquing it to?

Get the key from your dealer ,part number 307480

Torque is 105 ft/lbs

Ill assume you were not using an OEM key, and not torquing it to 105?

Ok, so I stand corrected. I just found out mine is a 62 model, not a 65 as I was told. It is model # RK-24L serial # 2226077. Is the keyway part # still the same? 307480?

Try connecting the battery, turn the keyswitch to "on" (not "start") and without the motor running, put it in neutral. The prop should spin. Then try putting it in gear (either way) - the prop should now not spin. If it still spins, you should test voltage through the pushbuttons. You should be getting 12 volts in either forward or reverse, and no voltage in neutral. A weak battery can also cause the gearcase to not hold in gear.

you put a 2x4 in your barrel to see if the prop was spinning?
from now on, plz dont do that as it is no problem to tell if the prop is turning in a barrel, a motor that size will push plenty enough water to know it!!
