I have a 1965 45 HP chrysler engine (M# 45531) with magneto ignition (Morse Fairbanks cast into the plate) that I am trying to get running. I purchased it non-running, with the understanding that one coil needed replacing (it was cracked and had clearly been hit - perhaps by a loose flywheel). Also, a previous mechanic wired in a standard keyswitch (not a mag type switch), thereby energizing the blue kill lead with juice from the battery. This caused the plastic nut on the coresponding points to melt, and generally rendering everything on that side of the ignition circuit dead.

While waiting for a replacement coil, points, and condenser to arrive, I thought I would at least check to make sure the "good" side was firing. It isn't.

Additional info:

1) I have disconnected the kill wires to minimize the effects of any other wiring snaffus.
2) I have used a 9 volt to energize the primary of the coil (still wired in) with the points open. I get a nice spark across the plug when the battery is removed. Therefore, I think the coil is good.
3) The magnets in the flywheel will easily pull in a screwdriver from 1/2" - 3/4".
4) Point gap (0.020), continuity, etc. all seem to be good.
5) There is some residual magnetism in the ferrite stack for the stator.

I'm out of ideas - do any of you have any suggestions? Is it worth the trouble to degauss the ferrite stack?

Also, this engine has an electric start, and the boat is equipped with the requisite battery, and lights. However, I don't see a charging circuit of any kind - nothing connected to the purple lead. Did the originals have an alternator, generator, or charging magneto? What specific parts should I be looking for to add a charging circuit to this motor?

Thanks in advance,
Matt

Re: 1965 45hp Chrysler Ignition and wiring issues

Found the problem...

The flywheel key was missing when I got the engine. I replaced it with a slightly modified woodruff key. Apparently the original equipment key also clocked the point cam. When inspecting the position of point opening versus the location of the magnets in the flywheel, it became clear that the cam was not positioned correctly. It's also clear that I need to locate the proper key.

I spun the cam until the key slot aligned with the one on the shaft/flywheel, and now I get a hot blue spark on the good cylinder. Anybody got a line on the correct key, or a picture/drawing of one so I can make it?

Thanks,
Matt

Hello Matt and welcome to Iboats. Here is a link for the correct key. Part number 14 on the diagram.
Magneto 45 HP chrysler
The original chrysler part number is 92498 however Mercury changed the number when they took over.

The wiring harness, and terminal strip on the mag 45 HP is the aame as the alternator version of that motor. Nothing goes to the purple wire on mine either. If it had an alternator that wire would go to the rectifier.

The Quicksilver PN is 28-F92498. Should be able to order or get one at any Merc dealer $5-7. Franzmarine of KC also sells them. He's one of the leaders of TheChryslerCrew website.
