1965 60hp feels like the motor kills at high speed

When running at high speed the motor feels like it kills and then comes back. At first it seemed to be only at high speed, but when running at a lower speed (with the trolling motor still in the water) it jerks the same way.
Also it has started jumping out of gear. I'll be going along and all of a sudden the rpms go up and I look down and the shift lever has moved out of gear.
What can I do to fix these problems?
Thanks.

Paps
I also have a 1965 60hp. I had been using a synthetic lower unit gear oil and it worked fine. This year in a rush to get in the water for the first time,I bought an off brand lower unit oil and first time out I had all kinds of problems with jumping out of gear. I changed back to synthetic oil and cured the problem. If this does not help it sounds like dog gears in the lower unit are bad.

Fishingtime,
Thanks for your reply.
I will try synthetic oil in the lower unit. Would this also be what makes the motor feel like it is killing when running?

I drained the oil and found that about a cup of water came out first. Where is the leak anyone know?
Thanks
