it is more than the carbs, and it is the 9.9 and 15 that are compatible, not the 9.5.

I read in your post that there is a lot more than that to doing the carb change out. just kinda wondering what all that might intell of. I have the same model that this guy does I thought for the longest it was a 9.9 and it was going to be easy. but someone had painted the hood of it so i wasn't sure if you could help it would be great.

I have a 72 sportwin 9.5. Will the 15hp carb work on it? I love this little motor but need a little more hp to lift my 14 ft boat on out of the water. Or any other ideas to boost hp on these great motors would be great. Also, my lean/rich knob is stuck in about the middle...do I have to take the carb apart to unstick? Thx everyone!

was this ur comment from youtube?

Re: 1965 9.5 to 15hp carb

I posted a thread recently about upgrading a 1986 9.9 to a 15 via carb change. For the most part it seems to be an urban myth with the exception of the earliest ('74-'76 I believe) models.

Rich from Canada posted this link which is about as good as it gets when it comes to these fine motors:

Hope this helps!:D

again the 9.5 is a totally different design, than the 9.9 and 15. the 9.5 was not on of OMC's finest moments.

I'll put it this way - if you can get a 15hp carb to fit your 9.5... well, that would be quite a feat. COMPLETELY different motors... I think they might share the lower unit drain screws and that's it.

so then because it is a 9.5 that means that it can't be done without going through the whole engine or something

It means it can't be done, period. No amount of "going through the engine" will turn an old style 9.5 into anything more than a 9.5...

There's no way you're going to get 15hp out of a 9.5. If it's still running good and not having exhaust gasket leaks and motor mount problems, count yourself lucky.
If you want a 15hp, go buy one. I doubt even some ingenius racing motor expert could get 15hp out of that 9.5 no matter how much time and money he spent.
Sorry--no chance.
