My Evinrude developed a lower unit lube leak coming out of a little hole above the prop. I assumed this was due to a seal so I tore the lower part of the lower unit off and I cant find any seals that would have failed to cause grease to leak out in this location (am I making any sense at all?) I was wondering what I can do to fix this. Thanks for any help. I know everyone on here likes to see pictures, but I dont have any right now, will try and get some this weekend. Thanks for any help!

Re: 1965 Evinrude 33 HP Lower Unit Problems

There is a little hole above the prop on my little 64 9.5. It looks like it just drains that area of the lower unit. And the exhaust goes through that area. What you see may be the byproducts of combustion, oil and gas residue from the motor. Check the oil or fluid and smell it. If it smells like exhaust that's what it is, if it smells like lower unit oil then never mind what I just said and replace the seals in the lower unit.....

boatflipper,
you mean this hole?
Sorry you went through the trouble. That's perfectly normal.

That is exactly where I was talking about. So that is just a drain hole for excess or what? Thanks so much for the help! I have missed a month of fishing trying to save a buck and figure this thing out without spending an arm and a leg. Again, thanks a lot!

Drains water and exhaust residue from the leg. Make sure that hole is clear and open.
