I DID SOME MORE LOOKING THE MOTOR IS ACTUALLY A 1959. im looking for heads for my 59 johnson 18 hose. my uncle gave it to me today and the engine is in really nice shape but i took it out and ran it today and the spark plug on the top cylinder came loose and stripped the threads out. i would like to just replace the head instead of repairing the hole. if anybody has anything please let me know on here or give me a call or text at EDIT

HI midwest. I have a '66 20 hp myself. Check ebay, twincityoutboards.com, or placing a WTB add on aomci.org for a new head. Thankfully, heads from many model years should fit your motor. Here's a parts catalog along with some other handy threads to help you keep her running. You can get any routine parts you may need like carb kits, tune up kits, etc... right here at iboats for about $20 each. Good luck. Keep us posted.

Look at the top of the page in the "Top Secret File" sticky, there is a list of salvage yards there, I would think that one of them can help you out.

It might be cheaper to have it heli-coiled at a good marina or machine shop. Done a lot of them and they work.

I wish I could figure out the deal with the 18-20 hp top spark plug hole being stripped out so often, I'v came across 6 of these older 18-20's in the last 2 seasons & 4 had stripped upper spark holes? So if you go the used head route ask seller for absolute condition of the threads!

That plug hole in those heads only had a 3/8" reach. Seems like everybody likes to cross thread or over torque them.

but why does it always seem to be the top hole? I have seen my share of stripped holes on many outboards but on the 18 - 20's its always the top which seems much easier to get at.
