1965 Johnson 40hp super seahorse HELP

Hi
I have a 1965 Johnson 40hp i was driving wot and the motor jumped out of gear reduced revs shifted to neutral then back in drive and it went fine again did it 2 more times that day. then the next week it did it again and wouldnt go back in forward or reverse. after opening the lower unit driveshaft is broken right above water pump plug. why would this happen and is this my only issue??

Is that an electric shift? Two possibilities are:
1. You have an electrical wiring problem or a defective shift switch. A shorted circuit can cause it to go into both gears at once which will snap the shaft. Or not go into gear at all.

2. A bent gearcase will cause the shaft to snap. They bend in the skinny section below the anti-cavitation plate. But that does not explain your jumping out of gear problem.

It is a manual shift and looks like it happened before I got the motor because the broken area is worn down. Seems the plug was the only thing holding it together.
