Shifter fork and cradle in the gearcase? He must have had more reason to be in there than just the drive shaft. No need to take that apart to change the drive shaft. Unless you meant to say prop shaft. Anyway, to answer your question, it won't be going completely into gear if it is damaged and that is bad for the clutch dog and forward gear. Ask the price of those two parts and you will have your answer.

Originaly he was trouble shooting because of no shift then found that the driveshaft was snapped right above the water pump because i asked him to check the water pump. he also was replacing some seals and told me the shift fork and cradle are pretty bad but should work for now i need it to work for a week then i can change it I wanted to know if there is anything I can do to baby it until i can get it fixed?

And what size shear pin do I need for this motor?

Thanks

If the drive shaft twisted off, you have larger problems than that. Either rent a boat, or get a nice long tow rope to take with you so someone will be able to tow you back to the ramp.

It's hard to twist the driveshaft until it breaks on a big twin. Since you mentioned the shift fork, it's a manual shift. Only a total lockup of the gear train could do that. Unless the guy replace all of the guts in that gearcase can you have any confidence in that unit.

As for the drive pin for the prop, any Evinrude dealer should be able to supply one for you. Get two, or three. A spare prop would be useful.

Good luck.

One other question: Where did you take this for repairs that didn't have drive pins for your prop? I've never seen an Evinrude shop that didn't have them. Was this some guy in a garage?

Rent a boat for the week.

A marine mechanic I know he works from his home garage but definately knows his stuff. He changed the pin but doesnt have a store so cant sell me one but there is a west marine and another omc place nearby.
He said the driveshaft had been broken before I owned the motor and the omc dealer said this was common for this age and had a replacement for 100 bucks.
If you saw my boat you would understand that I dont have the extra to rent a boat IM FLAT BROKE after paying for my reservation.
