I have a 1965 Johnson MQ-11c 9.5 horse outboard. GREAT little engine, but I am having a problem with the Idle Speed Adjustment. These engines had a LOT of vibration at low speed. Last weekend I couldn't keep the engine running in idle long enough to put it into gear. I looked under the cowling and found that the packing nut and the needle had both vibrated out and were laying in the casing where they had fallen. I'm pretty sure that I lost the packing material beneath the packing nut as well but I did not find it anywhere in the case. In looking at exploded parts drawings, I see that there are four individual pieces used for the packing (numbers 52 and 53 on the drawing), but there is no description of these in the parts list that accompanies the drawing. I'm sure that they would only give these parts two different numbers if they were different parts. I just can't tell what these look like. I have leftover parts from previous carp rebuilds and would like to know if any would work. If somebody has pictures of this packing material/packing nut/needle valve assembly, or knows what is in there, that would be a great help in getting my boat back on the water. This is the older assembly (1965) and has linkage to the adjustment knob on the front of the motor, NOT the newer version that had a speedometer type cable connecting the knob to the needle I am including a picture of the parts drawing with the packing amterial circled in red.

Thanks in advance for any help...

They are the same size washers. The outer ones are a white nylon type plastic material. The inner 2 are cork material. The plastic ones are not absolutely necessary, but keep the cork material from getting destroyed. They will just fit into the orifice, and tight around the needle OD. Very unlikely they fell out though, you usually have to dig them out with picks.

Thanks Chris,

I did have to dig the packing washers out. Didn't find any nylon, and the cork was pretty much destroyed, just like you said. Any idea where I can find these parts. I can't find a part number on them ANYwhere.
