1965 merc 500, was brought the motor without the gearcase installed, wanted an impeller installed. Posted on Johns old merc site, hoping maybe someone on iboats has the solution.

Trying to get it back together and a little confused. The reverse lockout cam is made up of 2 parts, 1 metal cam , 1 brass. I can find neutral only problem is the tabs don't line up. What am I doing wrong, I didn't take it apart so putting it back together is a little bit of a challenge since it's my first one to work on. I think I have the cam on properly, isn't the silver one supposed to be in the top and fit into the 2 slots in the exhaust housing where the shift rod comes down??? It will line up in reverse, when I bolt it together the shifter won't go past neutral and won't shift in anything but reverse.

The bottom pic is the gearcase in neutral, there is a nother neutrel but the shift into forward and reverse isn't close. I CANNOT align the bronze cam to make the silver cam line up the tabs to go into the gearcase.... ready to set it on fire

bkt can you put the reverse-lock cam into the driveshaft housing and mate it up to the lever cam without trying to stab the LU?

Stab the LU? Not sure what that means.
