The splaswell can be removed but in each starcraft it is slightly different ............. it is tedious work. Post a few photos ....... are you doing this for a transom replacement? Sometimes it can be left in place and just disconnected from the transom. VERY tight places to work but it can be done. Have you read the starcraft restoration files? http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=288451 You need to invest the time reading for some tips and post pictures.

I would like to replace the transom but cannot get to the 4 side bolts on each end of the transom. I tried to remove them but they just turn and will not come out.I think there are nuts inside but I cannot get at them.would it be advisable to cut openings in the side of the splashwell to get access to the nuts?

Yah, you'll need to remove that splash well: Drain tubes, a whole bunch of screws and some rivets all need to come out, then you can pull it. From there you'll probably need to cut off those bolts on each side.

Welcome!:D

Not to be argumentative......but are you SURE you can't get to them? I mean, it's a pain and you really gotta get your arm up there, but I've replaced two starcraft transoms without removing the splashwell.

Photos would help, have ya got some bunky...

EZ, he said they were spinning so I'm thinking he'll need to get in there with a grinder/cutting blade. That would be way tough with the splashwell in place, eh. I think doable but tough. Or, a dremmel tool would do the trick - just grind em down;)

Again, not to be argumentative :p but I think he's just saying the nuts are spinning cuz he hasn't put a wrench on 'em up there, not implying they're stripped or something.

I am seeing carriage bolts, rusted up, in turn spinning. Purely a guess.

Yah, without photos we're just shooting from the hip, hey bro.

Besides, we could argue about way more fun stuff than spinning bolts!:D
