I'm thinking about buying a boat with a 66 or 67 evinrude 80hp. I do not know much about older boat motors. Does anyone recommend this motor? Or do I need to stay away?

Thanks

it has an electric shift lower unit. and control. parts for these are extremely hard to find, and expensive. they are also, gas hogs.

its suggested to stay away from electric shift models. maybe look into investing in a little newer 80-85hp

Not all of them are electric shift. The manual shift models with points and condenser ignition and a single two barrel carburetor are simple motors.

Thanks for the advice. I think I'll steer clear of this one.

Thanks guys. I still have a chance to buy this boat. The owner is not sure if it is electric or manual shift. How can I tell if I go look at the boat. I have a few more questions. How reliable are these motors? I know that tashasdaddy said that parts are extreemly hard to find and expensive. He also said that it is a gas hog. How much of a hog are we talking? I just don't want to get something that is going to be a hassle. But then again, I don't want to pass up a great deal either. The motor will be pushing a 19 1/2' boat. Is the engine powerful enough? Thanks again for all the information. You guys are a great help.
