I just sold my boat and motor to two young avid fishermen this morning. As we were tying things down for towing, I tried to tilt the motor up for more ground clearence. It needs to be in forward to tilt but the shifter would not go into gear positively. I had to hold the lever down to achieve this. They are going to check this out when they get on the water to see if it stays in gear under power. I want to do whats right for these kids and told them that I would help them out if there's a problem. Years back I replaced the clutch dog and a couple of other parts and the shifting has been smooth ever since. The last time I took it out about five months ago, all was fine. Does anyone have an idea why it would't shift into forward after sitting on a stand in my garage? I haven't checked the gear lube level in a while, could that be part of it?

if you weren't turning the driveshaft by pulling the starter, it's probable the clutch dog was striking the face of the gear and not sliding into the gear...just needed a little "alignment" to slide in

Thanks for your reply. I hope it was just an alignment issue. I won't know untill I hear from the new owners. So mean while, if anyone else has a theory, I would appreciate hearing it.

I agree. Spin the prop slightly or pull the recoil slightly to let it get into forward to tilt.. sounds correct.

Agree with the answers above. Got to spin the prop or pull the rewind.

Thank you guys for your response. I talked to the two kids (twenty year olds) and they had taken the boat out the same day that they bought it from me. The motor ran and shifted just fine and they couldn't be happier.
