I have been absent from conversations about rebuilding Duratech boats for some time and I have learned a lot from reading about the experiences of other people. Last year, I was able to rebuild my 1966 Duratech Orion enough so I could use it for fishing. We totally gutted the hull, replaced the transom (what a job) and the floor, installed an electrical panel and bilge pump, and rebuilt the the main bench seat/storage bin.

With spring on the way, I am now attempting to take a couple more steps. First, last summer, I used a 25 hp outboard tiller model (which gave the boat limited performance). But now I am planning to upgrade the motor to one in the 40-60 hp range with controls and a new steering system. And I want to devise a back rest for the bench seat/storage bin.

So I have some questions. First, what kind of steering system and wheel is best for this size and style of boat? The old pulley system was rusted and not functioning so it was ripped out. What is the best system with which to replace it.

Second, the main bench seat/storage bin has been rebuilt with treated plywood, foam rubber and water proof cover and provides very comfortable seating but when a steering system is installed there is no back rest for driving the boat. Since I use it primarily for fishing, I do not want a solid back. Any ideas?

And one more for now, when I got the boat, the windshield was already gone but now I would like to install one. Any suggestions as to what to get and where to find it?

The boat hull is great, no leaks and rock solid. I have taken it out on Lake Ontario on rough days and it handles the waves with ease. So I'm looking forward to going to the next level.

Thank you for your help.

If you are not going back to the cable style, you could go with Teleflex steering. I re-did my old cable steering on my 64 Duratech and love it.

When you say you don't want a 'solid' seat back, what kind of functionality are you looking for? You could mount 2 seats with backs on that front bench which rotate around for fishing.

Windshields are not the easiest thing to locate...since on these older boats, the windshield is most often broken, and rather than replacing just the glass / plexiglass, they pilfer the windshield & frame from another old boat...so now there is not even a frame to work with when someone gets that old boat to restore. That said, if you're in an area where there are old boat yards, you could check these kinds of places for one. Taylor Made still makes classic runabout style windshields as well, they're going to run three or four hundred. Check the info on the DuratechBoats website on the Duratech parts tab.
