Hi again,I finally got the transom poured and got her on the water and its cooling fine now.But the coil is bad I'm pretty sure.As soon as it gets to operating temp it starts running erratic, misses and surges and eventually dies and wont start until it cools down, consistently does this.Found some big cracks in the coil also.My question is what automotive coil will work on this motor?I believe it has a white wire with a red stripe that is the resistor wire, so will any auto coil without an internal resistor work?I replaced every other ignition component so it almost has to be the coil.Thank you for any input.I cant stress how much ive appreciated your guys help so far.thanks again.

Don't know if this is helpful but I read that any 2 lug automotive coil with internal rsistor will work when the white red/stripe wire has been replaced with regular wire. I wouldn't think you would run a resistor wire to a resistor coil so you may have to replace the striped wire if going with a car coil. I am in the process of doing that now, my resistor wire was rotten and I have not found a source for resistor wire.

If the resistor wire is still good then I'd imagine using a coil without a resistor will work with the old resistor wire.I found a coil that costs 15 bucks and it has no resistor. It should work.
Any thoughts.

As long as its a 2 lug coil I would try it. $15 could be a cheap fix. Better than $100 for the oem coil.

Re: 1966 Evinrude 100H.P. resistor wire and coil?

replaced the old coil with a duralast c819 coil from autozone,it requires a resistor and its for a points style ignition.I just checked the voltage at the terminals and it was 7 volts which means I did have a good resistor wire in the existing harness. It ran so good that I burned up 12 gallons of gas in 4 hours at mostly full throttle, just trying to get any other bugs out. There were none except that I didnt realize how thirsty she is at wot,so i had to borrow some from a fellow boater.now that I know I dont plan on doing that again.Thank you all for your help.Chris

That thing is expectional if you used 12gal in 4 hours. Normal fuel usage is aroung 10% of the hp/hr. So 10 gal per hour at wot. Thanks for the update on the coil. Keep us informed if you have any issues with it.

Just an update,This coil is still functioning properly after a season and a half of tubing, skiing and fishing. No issues at all.

Thanks for the update. And I did remove my resistor wire and put in a coil with internal resistor in and have had the same luck, it's been a year with no issues.
