1966 Evinrude Fisherman 6 hp - How much packing in low speed needle valve?

I'm rebuilding the carb on a 1966 Evinrude Fisherman 6 hp. When I took the carb apart, the packing in the low speed needle valve was disintegrated. According to one manual I'm looking at, it says I need three new packing washers and a nylon washer. Is that right? It definitely didn't have the nylon washer and I would be surprised if there were three packing washers in there as well.

Just want to make sure I'm doing this right so I don't have to do it again!

Thanks for your help.

It's been awhile, but that sounds about right. Just make sure the packing nut starts and tightens down properly.

I believe originally they only called for 2 packing washers. The nylon is added to hold them intact and to keep them from disintegrating. I think we have all sat and picked the cork washers out with a dental pick more than once.

I just put a kit (from iboats) into my 75, E/rude 6 HP.
The kit had several fibre packing "rings"....the "packing washer" is to compress the packing. I used one packing ring plus the packing washer....and it was OK.
You only need "enough" packing. If you add to much, it will prevent the nut from getting started properly.
There seems to be many ways to skin the cat.

My OEM manual disagrees with the parts diagram, which disagrees with the Sierra kit instructions. Who to believe? ...:facepalm::D

Most kits I've used, provide two packing washers and one nylon washer for each jet. The nylone washer goes in last, to keep the nut from chewing up the packing washers.
