1966 fastwin carb question

hey i wanted to know on front of my carb there is a matel screen and what appers to be kinda a air filter dose anyone know what this is it is all messed up and i wanted to know if it was worth replacing and where to get one and what it dose its not enclosed or anything

I beleave that they called them an air silencer, didn't work to well. Run it without it, woun't cause any problems.
