1966 Johnson 33HP Carb Float Issues... Cork Sealant?

My 33hp Johnson outboard had a Fuel flooding issue last season that was intermittent. I took the bowl off and discovered the Cork float was rubbing against the bowl slightly. The float is a very tight fit in the float bowl, its not the original 1966 float but it is an OMC/Johnson/Evinrude part. There is a small amount of wiggle on the Brass arm that is attached to float but seems to be a normal amount for a float.
I want to trim/shave some of the OD of the float to have more clearance inside the bowl. How would I go about resealing the bare exposed cork?

If you can guarantee no ethanol contact you can use shellac....as they did originally. If not.... if you have a decent gas tank repair shop nearby, take the float along to them and see if they would dip it in tank sealer for you.

Pretty much, its the Johnson version. Great Motor, Powerful and Pretty Simple to work on. Most of the parts are Still available for this outboard!

I'm gonna try the Tank Sealer method. ill post results of how it came out and what condition its in at the end of the season.

Yes they are a wonderful / simple / rugged motor ( 40 hp crankshaft and rods ) and easy to maintain.----Spend the money on fuel instead of $100/ hr maintenance at a shop for newer motors.

+1 ^^. (btw, Red Kote gas tank sealer can also be used for the float.)
