I am mounting a 1966 Johnson 40hp on my 1971 Quachita and I want to use the original controls for the engine. I have searched and kind of narrowed it down to the "shipmaster" controls. Does anyone know if this is the original controls for that engine? If not can you shed some light on what I need? Thanks.

That is correct. The Shipmaster control was made for many years. They all will fit, but to be "correct" you should get the one with shaped knobs. The older ones had round knobs.

If you buy a used control, make sure it includes the cables, even if the cables are junk. You need the ends off the old cables to put on new ones because they are not included with new cables. iboats has new cables.

BTW, Evinrude Simplex controls are the same thing, with a different name on them.

Re: 1966 Johnson 40hp Original Controls

The Shipmaster and Simplex control units came with two different cable types, depending on the manufacturing year. Units made prior to 1979 had end fittings that were held in place with set screws. The '79 and later units had permanently affixed end fittings. They are called Type 400 and Type 479 cables, respectively.

If you want to be 100% acurate as far as the "proper" unit for you motor, you should look for a Shipmaster unit (Johnson) that has the Type 400 cables and end fittings.

Welcome to the iboats.com forum! The members here are great and the experts, which I am not, can help you with any question about that great old motor. You already have two of the best posting in your thread and I am not suggesting in any way that they are incorrect. However, since an electric shift gearcase was offered in 1966, there is another possibility for the type of controls needed. Please post your motor's model number which will eliminate all the questions I have. Good luck!

Great point and many heads are always better than one or two. Thanks for the contribution!
