Greetings, this is my first post, I think. I thought I started a thread a couple weeks ago when I bought my vintage boat but couldn't find it when I looked for it later so I'm trying again.
I got lucky and picked up a 1966 McKenzie 16' aluminum Cherokee runabout style boat with a 1965 Johnson 40 electric and a Holsclaw trailer, all in very nice, original condition. It's at All Marine at the moment where it's being made both sea worthy and road worthy. The trailer is adjustable for different size boats and they're going to retract the tongue about a foot so I can get this rig in my garage. Its obviously been garage kept all or most of it's life and deserves to continue to be kept that way.
I'll get some photos when I get it back from All Marine who is getting the Johnson 40 engine ready to go (new impeller, gas lines, clean carb, drain and replace the oil in the bottom end and the top end of the motor as well as replace the coils and points. The McKenzie is getting new steering cables and throttle cables, a new transom plug, and the ignition switch reworked as it even still has the original key in it but doesn't want to move, yet.
The whole setup is amazing in how original everything is from the the step traction diamond on top of the trailer fenders as well as the Holsclaw decals, the original paint, vinyl seats, canopy frame and cover, "walk-through" windshield that actually still opens, and a Johnson that barely looks used under the engine housing.
The last valid boat sticker and trailer license stickers are both from 1976 so, I'm guessing, this boat and motor were only used lightly for 10 years and sat for the last 40+ years in the guy's garage.
I found it at the local auction house and when I was checking it out before it went off, I was amazed that even the paint on the bottom of the boat was almost all there. The guy who's getting the boat ready for its "maiden voyage", with me at least, is going to show me how well the boat will shine up with the wax/polish he's going to show me that he always uses He doesn't sell it but I'll know what to look for once I see it.
I used to go fishing in Ontario for a week after Labor Day for quite a few summers after I got out of the Air Force. We went there as a family from the time I was around 9 until I graduated high school before that. I look forward to taking it back up there and to a friend of mine's place in Quebec, just over the Quebec/Ontario border North of where I fished in Ontario, which was about 70 km North of Kingston. Anyway, an older gentleman who was always there the week we were there in my later visits up there had a similar boat (runabout style) and I immediately thought of him when I saw it.
I realize it's not the "ideal" fishing boat but I can easily make it work and enjoy the heck out of it just the same. Besides, I'm in my early sixties anyway and won't be wearing it out either, probably but I'll have a blast with it for a while at least.

Welcome aboard! To find your old post back, after you log in, click on the dropdown under your user name at the top right corner. A "recent posts" link appears which will take to any of your past posts. I know getting pics posted was a bit daunting at first but just read through the tutorial and give it a shot. I have researched KcKenzie/Cherokee boats quite abit and have a 1966 brochure. Info is pretty scarce. There are a few screen shots of the brochure in the "Cherokee" boat section that you will find at the bottom of the "Forums" home page. If you can't find something, just ask. Lots of very helpful folks here.

This is my 14ft 1965 Cherokee Playboy with 65 Merc 500 that I restored few years back.

I may be able to help you identify the model. Sounds like you found a great jewel worth saving! Permission to follow along?

What is the trick to using the "Restore" option when I write something and get bumped around? Everytime I hit it, the text reappears for a second and then I get bumped to the forums page, go back and it's gone again.
I also attempted two of the three ways in the tutorial (the first two) to upload photos without any success. I'm beginning to think that my laptop and the website have communication issues but it's probably just me! :)
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated, mates.
Even just a post like this, text only, has my cursor spinning and spinning for minutes on end until I hit the refresh button and then the post appears.

Almost forgot, the text I couldn't restore was thanking you, jbcurt00 and ssdale for the welcome and to say (even though it goes without saying here), permission granted ssdale.

:welcome: aboard nelsress,

Thanks for putting up the read on your Cherokee purchase, looking forward to seeing some pics.

The restore doesn't work for me either unless I refresh the page.

Thanks for the welcome, Watermann! Still no luck with the photos, maybe it has something to do with them being taken on my phone. When I get it back, I'll take some with my digital camera and see if they upload any better.

I heard from the motor mechanic yesterday who told me the '65 Johnson 40 was in pretty darn good shape. One set of points needed to be replaced and the carb floats are probably good to go as is. He was surprised to find the coils in fine shape. He said they weren't original, which is a big part of why they're still good, and were probably replaced in the mid 70's. He is going to check to see if the pump impeller is still usable as he says they can be expensive. This surprised me as I thought I looked them up and found that they were only about $16 or so?

Back around the time this boat was being purchased new, I was in the USAF at tech school training to be a one and two engine fighter jet mechanic but I still wanted an experienced outboard mechanic to look her over the first time at least. So far (knock on wood-my head) it appears the motor's condition is as good as I had suspected/hoped.

The Holsclaw trailer it came with is adjustable and they're going to adjust it to its shortest length before I pick it up so, hopefully, it will fit in my garage bay. If not, I saw a thread about hinging the tongue somewhere here on iboats that looked like a pretty slick solution to shortening it further, if need be.

Updates and hopefully photos to follow soon.

Update:

The mechanic replaced the impeller as the old one was cracked and brittle and he was mistaken, it is NOT an expensive item. The fuel lines were also replaced. The only thing he said that may need to be addressed in the future is if after running the motor for 10-12 hours it is still "spitting", the carburetor should be removed and cleaned. He said it didn't look bad at all and that the spitting may be caused by a little bit of dirt breaking loose and could clear itself and said they often do.

Before even putting the boat on the local lake he uses to test boats he said both the throttle cables and the steering cables needed to be replaced. This was something I suspected prior to talking with him and he confirmed in our first meeting. The throttle cables were stiff and a bit frayed and it felt like I might break the controls if I forced them. As for the steering cables, he said that Fish and Game Commission Rangers are always at the lake and zoom in on vintage boats to inspect the steering as that style steering is no longer allowed on new boats for safety reasons so they're picky about sloppy cables, corroded tensioners, etc. so he typically installs new SS braided cables, has them at the correct tension as well as sand blasts and paints the tensioners and they're happy.

That's about all it needed and, I'm hoping, is ready to bring home in the next day or two.

It looks like I finally got photos to upload, at least they're showing on my screen as I write this. Unfortunately, I couldn't fit this in my "abbreviated" garage so I'm moving it along, tomorrow, I THINK. Anyway, as you can see, it's in pretty nice original condition, as I believe I indicated before and, to me at least, has lots of "cool" factor. I hope you enjoy the photos and I hope the boat's new owner really enjoys owning it. He resides right on the water so I'm sure he will.
