Piece of cake, Spence.

First: Get a factory Service Manual. Study it.

Then go to the Engine FAQs Forum here and do "Outboard won't start".

Let us know what you find, and good luck. :)

lol ok i fiddle it with it for an hour and got made so i just hauled back pulled the cord and it fired right up. guess it just takes a little muscle. i was just scared to pull it hard cause this thing is like an antique. but i do have another problem. i cant keep her running. it will idle and then die.

A 1966 is not an antique! An antique would be a 1940's Green tank Merc.

:D

If you can't keep the outboard running, it's time to rebuild the carb and give your motor a full tune-up. If it's been sitting awhile, it probably needs a new water pump impeller, and have the ignition system checked including cleaning the points.

Get a Mercury Service Manual. Tune up parts can be found here:

Great motors. Get it running correctly and take your time to learn how everything works together.

Make sure the vent is open on your fuel tank.

Now you know the motor will fire....1st thing is to put in a new impeller and change the lube in the lower end. Straight ahead to do and will make sure that when you do get the motor to stay fired there will be plenty of water pumping up in the block to keep it cooled off.

Remove the flywheel and install new points and condensers and plug wires and plugs. Get a carb gasket kit and a new needle valve and take the carb apart and clean it.

I have one of those motors that I am getting back on the air right now.

Get an impact wrench. Its a device the comes with various screwdriver bits
When you put the bit in the screw and strike the top of the tool with a hammer It should twist the screw loose.
