Guys, I am a total newbie to boats and boat engines and have a few questions. I have a Merc 500 that runs great. It was taken care of but it does need a detailed tune up. Is this like a cars tune up? Cap/rotor, plugs and wires, ect. The carbs do need to be rebuilt and no one in town works on these older motors anymore so Im gonna have to Hans solo this one. I have never done this before but I am mechanically inclined as I drag race and have a little knoledge but I grew up on fuel injection so carbs are a big ??? to me. Anyone have tips or can someone post a how to rebuild a carb post? It has two carbs in it and well, this is gonna be a challenge to me. Also, can someone help me find a three blade prop for this motor? Is there any manuals like Chiltons makes for automobiles but for boats? A do it yourselfer manual would be great, and where would I be able to pick one up at? Internet only or is there a store I can purchase it at? Man, I feel like a newb, lol. Thanks.

Best to start by search/Google for a manual. There out there.

If you were into cars..... These motors aren't that difficult to work on. The very first thing you need is a factory Manual. They can be had through any Merc Dealership. Also available at Amazon. Ebay etc. You can also go on many of the Dealer's websites for a parts breakdown. The information is out there, you just have to hunt around a bit. The aftermarket manuals, like Seloc etc. are ok but shouldn't' be used as the last word. I use both manuals. The Seloc manual is more "procedure" oriented. but lacks technical information. The factory manual is geared toward the professional, and assumes you know the basics already. :)

Clean the cap inside with carb cleaner and Q-tips, replace the carbon button. Rotor is NOT replaceable. Replace plugs. Carbs can be sent out for overhaul if needed. The Mercury 1965 and prior manual will suffice for your 66 as well.

This is a great site. I just got a Merc 500 50 hp 1965-66 and new to this. I ordered a Seltoc Manuel off of Amazon.com. I also found the prop on E-Bay and ordered it from a guy in Wis. He was a great help. Look for Rogers, i forgot actual name
