so two yrs down the road after buying my 16ft fiberglass with the 1966 merc950 on it I finally get the money to take it into the shop and have it worked on. I was informed two yrs ago when I had them diagnostic it that all that was wrong was the fuel pump and the carbs needed cleaned.. this time around when I took it in I told them I could not pay over the 550 dollars they quoted me for the work and they said np. I get a call a day later saying my crank and 2 of my points are bad and to do the full work on the boat they will charge me 900 or so dollars. I told them to do the crank and the points but don't do the fuel pump.. I now have 1300 dollars soaked into my boat. So question number one is.... is it worth it??? and question number two is how many fuel pumps does this motor have and how hard is it to rebuild myself.. question number three is did I pay to much for the repairs??? As you might have guessed this is my first boat ever and that is why i keep hitting the dead horse with the stick but every time I do I get a little bit more progress. oh and the motor does run just a little rough.. :)

Thank you,

Mort;

Here is the parts list for your engine:

MERC 950 - Mercury, Mercruiser, Force, etc. Parts Lookup

Here is a link to the condensed version of the Clymer service manual which you should download soonest to your computer as the link is short lived. Page 134 will show you a schematic of the fuel pump and how it operates:

Small Engine Repair Reference Center Home: MERCURY - MERCURY 6 CYLINDER MODELS (1966-1968).

What was wrong with the crank that they could determine it that quickly for you and have such a handy price ready?

I don't understand, are we talking about the crankshaft? What was wrong with the engine in the first place? Sounds like they could see the money in your wallet.

Re: 1966 merc 950 fuel pump rebuild and other questions

I am uncertain myself they said the crank was bad and the #3 and 5 points were bad and I had the wrong spark plugs in it... they charged me 495 for the work havnt got it fixed yet told me the points were 180 a piece... I know last year I was able to start the motor but it would only stay running as long as I kept hitting the choke button and then after it warmed up I could put it in gear and start throttling up to get it to run down the river.. now interesting enough I could have my dad sit at the back of the boat pumping the fuel bulb to keep it running for a long time but if we didn't keep the fuel bulb pumped up the fuel would run out and the motor would die.. when this happend I would have to sit in the water for about a half hour before the motor would run again... so I am not sure if they told me right or not but I am getting a new crank 2 new points and new spark plugs for 495.. I am going to rebuild the fuel pump myself getting ready to buy the kit now.. If this helps at all let me know. otherwise I have no clue what it is they are talking about except for the points which I can't even find for sell on here...

Thanks,
Mort

You would be wise to get the boat away from those hacks, if they haven't started as they are putting it to you.

Hindsight,,, as mentioned, these guys are bending you over. All you initially had was a fuel issue [ fuel pump-prime bulb-carb probable cause] Next time start here with your questions, not after you got it back from a repair shop. If you know the difference between a screwdriver and a wrench the guys on here can walk you through just about any repair.

Something smells very fishy, and I'm nowhere near the ocean.

If they were just doing the carbs and fuel pump, there was NO reason to be anywhere near the crankshaft. Have them explain WHY, and SHOW you the "bad" parts. Sounds like the same crooks we have around here in the repair business.

Re: 1966 merc 950 fuel pump rebuild and other questions

Well I done already paid and they were told they had to keep the parts they pull for me.. That is why I told them to **** off on the rest of the repairs.. I just purchased everything to make my boat legal on the water and I bought the fuel pump kit here on iboats.... Live and learn I guess.. I will never take my boat to someone again I will be probably asking a lot of questions about my boat over the next couple years from you guys.. I plan on overhauling the whole motor found a complete rebuild kit for my motor for 130 dollars... plus I plan on redoing the paint carpet ect. as well :)... Thanks for all the tips guys and sucks to know that my thoughts were right on them screwing me.

See item 3 under DISTRIBUTOR ASSEMBLY, COMPLETE (MERC 950E)

Don't want to spoil your day but:

Anyway, we all have to live and learn, just hope you don't have to go through that again.

Quote "I could have my dad sit at the back of the boat pumping the fuel bulb to keep it running for a long time but if we didn't keep the fuel bulb pumped up the fuel would run out and the motor would die".
The fuel pump was the cause here. After sitting the carbs probably needed a good cleaning and linc and sync. I agree they should have not made an assesment in relation to the crankshaft. I,n my experience if you have a wiped journal on number 3 then you would also have a bunch of shot bearings possibly a shot rod etc. Someone screwed you there. Good luck on the fuel pump rebuild.

Re: 1966 merc 950 fuel pump rebuild and other questions

Just got the boat back out of the shop and have more info on what it is they actually did and pricing... Also How many fuel pumps does my Merc 950 have??? I ordered 2 kits hope that is enough.. I also need to know a good way to clean my carbs and if anyone can tell me how to do the adjustments and the alignments on them.

So the shop changed my rotor (not crank that is my bad for not knowing what the heck I am talking about sry guys) for $54.13, They changed 2 breaker point asy and charged me $90 each point, They put in new champion spark plugs @ $5.95 each and installed a new keel roller for me @ $11.99. They charged me $190 for labor bringing me to a grand total of $504.63... I talked to the mechanic who worked on my motor and he said that the spark is really good now the rotor turns without any wobble now and he tightened down one of the fuel pumps because it was leaking which stopped the leak.. But he said he could not get the motor to fire.... he said this is caused because my fuel line wasn't disconnected over the winter and it gummed up the carbs so it won't fire over.... Advise or thoughts on this??? it was firing last fall before I stored it..

My boat is a 1977 fiberform title says it is 16’ the shop says it is an 18’ the motor is the 1966 (shop says it is 67 but I ran vin before and it said 66) Merc 950 I will get the vin# on the motor later on for you guys.. Thanks again for any help and the help so far
