Do a web search under 'old mercs' (or similar) ... more than ebay is out there. There are guys who are only into 60s and earlier Merc stuff and know about new and used parts or have it themselves. Good luck with your repair.

Of course, you have some of those guys here as well.

Have you checked with Max Rules dot com or B O A T S dot net, both of them carry some of the harder to find parts for the older motors.

thanks for the info, i actually am making a dwell plate from a printed image i found and a piece of cardboard.

i honestly want to convert it over to the later style solid state ignition but i don't know what all will interchange. I've heard that there are many parts that will but i haven't gone into the research yet.

i looked at the points last night, the look to be worn, at least the one is, I'm going to try to clean them up with some sand paper and reset everything (dwell and timing) i have the fsm. this weekend to see if she will fire. it has 120psi -125psi compression on all 6 but I'm pretty sure its sat for 7 years or more. so I'm planning on getting it to fire and then probabally rebuilding the carbs and then depending on how well she runs decide whether or not to replace the points or go with a triggered setup. I'm new to outboards, but I've been through a few i/o's had an old 470 and a 165 or 2.

i appreciate any info you have, i just can't see spending 40$ a piece for points when they are a wear item, i definitely want to go with the breakerless setup but i feel like i want to get it running before i go that route. its in ok condition I've already had to replace the starter solenoid and it cranks over now, so I'm just doing it in steps.

the spark issue i have it that it will spark, but only once in a while, so it really looks like points. I'm going to pull the cap and the points and set the dwell and hopefully i get consistent spark.
