I am in the process of restoring a 1966 Strarcraft Jetstar and want to replace the wooden dash. To do this I have to remove the steering wheel and column and that is what giving me a fit. I can't seem to pull the steering wheel off the shaft.

Reviewed many post regarding this and have discussed with a multitude of other individuals. Some think the wheel may be screwed on but I don't see any material about that being the case on any other posts.

Could the steering wheel be screwed on contrary to a keyed shaft. Any material or suggestion regarding that would be great.

If you have the center nut off put it back on but not tight. Attach a long ratchet strap securely around the center area of the steering wheel and attach the other end of the strap to the transom or down to the trailer. Now put a far amount of tension on the strap and tap, hit the center nut with a hammer.

If the rotary unit is still hanging like in photo #2, put it back on the dash. Soak the shaft for a day or two with PB Blaster or similar product. Put the nut on so the shaft thread and nut are flush. Sitting at the helm, put your knees under the bottom of the steering wheel while pushing, pull on the top of the wheel with one hand and with the other hand smack the nut with a BFH. Repeat as necessary.

The three handed version is needlessly complicated. LOL
