Hello
I was looking over the forum and found some great info ... I have read several posts on the water output of these old motors but have found some conflicting responses to my question. This may be a little long but I want to make sure I provide you with all the info I know about the motor.

I just purchased a 1967 (so I was told... I'll get the #'s later to confirm) for $125. The compression was 100 at top and 90 below, I sprayed wd40 in and got around 112 and 102. The motor would not turn over until we connected the booster pack ground to the engine block and left the pos. on the boat batt. connection (probably just a bad ground connection). It then started almost immediately which surprised me because the boat has not ran for almost two seasons.

The problem I am having is the water discharge... there was some water coming out of the upper exhaust port (just a little spray) for a couple seconds then nothing. We only ran the motor (in a deep barrel) for a few minutes because I didn't want it to overheat but still had no water. The guy says he put a new impeller in and has not ran the motor since (I'm hoping he didnt run it because he knew nothing about changing the lower gear oil before the winter). He did include a new impeller he had laying around which he had because they came in a package of two. He also said that he never saw any water coming out when he was running it... I hope he didnt run it for long...? and thats why he got the new impeller put in.

I wish I could confirm the guys stories about the motor but can only take his word ... seemed like a good guy though... not out to make $$$.

I guess what I'm asking is... does anyone think I should just replace the impeller? or does the water discharge from elsewhere. is there a link that someone knows of to give me directions? I work on all my VW's but have never messed around with outboards. I'm guessing I start by taking off the lower end and looking for the impeller... is that the same as the water pump?

What else should I replace while I got the lower end off? thermostat?

sorry for all the questions.. I just really want to get this done the correct way so I dont have any problems out on the lake. I also have a 67 60hp that seems to run good and spurt out water from the exhaust port with compression of 90 90 90 84, but I think that will be too heavy for my boat so would really like to get the 40hp going.

Thanks

i have a similar motor with a good water pump, there should be alot of water comming out of that port, they do dry rot and become hard and or soft and will bend and break under the pressure of the water. I would advise changing it

Whenever you're unsure, change the impeller...good insurance to keep your motor safe and running right...good idea to change it once a year or every other year as general practice. Check/inspect it a couple of times a year.

Thanks for the info... gives me hope for this engine... is there any site that may help me find out where the impekker is and what else I should change while I'm in there... I am going to replace all gaskets and oil but I dont want to have to take it apart again if I miss something.. I have also read forums that say I should shoot water up the intake pipe to clean out the water jackets... I may get to it all this weekend

The water pump is in the first bulge above the flat anti-cavitation plate. It must be submerged in your test tank to work.

The thermostat is under the cover on top of the cylinder head. It rests in a plastic housing with a check valve below. People seem to insist on throwing all that stuff away, then wonder why it doesn't work. You need that stuff, especially the plastic housing and check valve.

That motor has a thermostat controlled, recirculating cooling system. When the motor is running at less than thermostat temperature, the cooling water goes back to the water pump for recirculation. When it gets warm enough to open the thermostat, water is discharged out the exhaust and replaced with cool lake water. This is a continuing process any time it is running and the thermostat is constantly sampling the temperature and opening an closing as necessary to maintain the temperature. When it is closed, a light spray is seen out the exhaust relief. When it is open, the spray is heavier. The spray is constantly changing along with the state of the thermostat. At no time is it a garden hose discharge. It also more or less flows out at high boat speeds instead of spraying.

Whew!!!. Why do I keep explaining this. I should copy and paste.

Well said F_R I have one that hardly spits any water out but stays nice and cool. It's all about the thermostat, not that you should not check your impeller but do not expect a bunch of water to come out like some of the other outboards you see.
