Hi everyone,

I bought a 1967 evinrude 6 hp fisherman and even though it runs great I decided to buy a tune up kit to be safe (points, plugs, and condensors). Well I took off the flywheel and everything looks new including the coils.

The only thing I see is that the points are not set at a wide enough gap and the spark plug wires look old.

Do the points need readjusting from time to time or is it more likely that the person who did it gaped them incorrectly? Could this have caused damage?

How do I change the spark plug wires?

What are the flywheel torque specs?

Thank you in advance,

Jack

They do need regapping from time to time as the rubbing block on the pts. wears. Don't worry about any damage because of this. You will have to remove the armature plate to change the plug wires. Your flywheel torque, I'm almost certain, is 40-45 ft.-lbs.
Pts. gap is .020 as you already know, I'm sure. Spark plug gap is .030
Make sure you use metal core plug wires--copper core preferably. They sell them at laingsoutboards.com for about 3 bucks and shipping is usually 3 days. They might even sell them at iboats, I'm not sure.
happy boating,
